The manager thought he had struck it lucky when he dropped his old wife and picked a new woman. He is the one who always made the right decision and was always in the right place at the right time, set on the road to wealth: property investments, business consulting, office buildings. The last thirty years were about him; he spotted every loophole and squeezed through the eye of a needle when he had to, seeing himself as the hero of an age that had none. The novel addresses the reader too, as the manager of their own life, its right and wrong decisions, goals and aimlessness.
