A judge on Curaçao, where he grew up, Lucas Saverijn has become an outsider after trouble in court. On board a ship he encounters Gabriela Obrizki, who escaped Argentina's dictatorship and lives a muted life abroad. A memory draws him to her; with her family watching, she lets him come close and finally entrusts him alone with what she has hidden.
