After the flooded hill country of his debut, the narrator, the author himself, comes down along the Ipeľ river to the lowlands and the centre of his home town in search of Sándor Petőfi and his legend. He is trying to write a biography of the Hungarian Romantic poet and revolutionary, who becomes a cosmic and comic point of reference that he circles without ever merging with it. Part autobiographical chronicle, part biography and part bon-vivant's travelogue, the book takes in the Bank of Love in Banská Štiavnica, the gallery of Halič castle, Hungary's Hortobágy national park and Lučenec, and asks how a person today can relate to a historical figure and to the muddled, simplified cultural memory of central Europe.
