Two young brothers spend the summer of the 1968 invasion hidden in their father's home village, after he rushes them out of Prague as the Warsaw Pact tanks arrive and shooting fills the streets. In the countryside they roam the woods, swim and compete for the attention of the girl all the local boys want. The occupation reaches them only as radio reports and rumours, and they understand little beyond the fact that the Russians have come. Their uncle, the village clown who is meant to look after them, turns out to be hiding something. Evil in its social and private forms runs through the boys' adventures, as does a search for hope.
