The narrator is burnt out: tired, cynical and without hope. Suddenly dismissed as head of public relations at Zagreb's Museum of Contemporary Art, he flees the capital for an unnamed Adriatic island and spends the summer alone in an old watchtower on its summit, keeping watch for fires. The real task of the season is another: to rediscover hope and the wish to live, as he meets the island's people in moments both tender and cruel.
