The heroines of these stories are mostly young Slovak women trying to find their place abroad and in relationships with foreigners. Later they also discover the joys and hardships of motherhood, and conflicted feelings towards other mothers and their children. Surrounded by spiteful cleaning ladies, permanently busy husbands and insolent shop assistants, they come to realize that they have to help themselves, and sometimes, to their horror and surprise, they uncover dark and unsuspected sides of their own nature.
