Rosa returns to Tenerife, to the run-down house of the once influential Bernadotte family. She is searching, though she does not quite know for what. Her grandfather Julio was a courier in the Civil War and a prisoner of the Fascists; he fled and came back, and now he guards the gate of an old people's home on the island, a man who knows privileges only as those of others. The story moves backwards through Julio's century, from the present to 1919, following three families of different classes on the edge of Europe, where colonial history and twentieth-century dictatorship leave their wounds.
