Maria, Janek, Anna and Stefan came to Szczecin after the war from different parts of the country, not by choice but because history moved the borders and tore them from their roots. Only Ula has always lived here; born Ulrike into a German family, she covers the traces of her old identity in the new Poland. In the city risen from rubble they want to love, laugh, have children and go to the seaside. They have no family here, but meet at the Bambino milk bar, where some of them work. The novel spans communist Poland from the war to 1981.
