Leonardo, a Dutch poet who resembles his author, has moved to Genoa and writes long letters home about the city, meant as raw material for a future novel, while admitting he may have invented it all. He hangs out at a bar full of mirrors in the old town, dreaming of the loveliest girl in Genoa, and roams steep, dark lanes teeming with rats, prostitutes and eccentrics worthy of an Italian film. His own comfortable move abroad is set beside the journeys of Rashid, who sells roses on the street, and Djiby, who survived the sea crossing from Senegal, and beside Don, a British academic permanently drunk and living in a fantasy.
