After her divorce Solvej settles in a remote farmhouse outside Hvium, the village where her daughter now lives with the girl's father, so that the two can be close again. As a health visitor she enters many homes and notices much, yet she is lonely, sees far less of her child than she had hoped, and soon becomes a subject of village gossip. Søren, the man next door, greets her with practical help. Just as she starts to feel settled, she learns how much Hvium keeps hidden, and has to ask herself when she ought to intervene and when to keep out of it. As always, it is the children who pay the highest price.
