Paya Nie

Aceh during the Free Aceh Movement's rebellion. Four women go down into a swamp called Paya Nie to gather sedge for weaving mats. Their talk keeps turning to the past: the past of the swamp and the villages around it, the past of military rule, and their own pasts. Rumours, local legends, eyewitness accounts and perhaps some tall tales blend together. Without their knowing it, a squad of Indonesian marines is preparing a large-scale attack on the swamp, which is suspected of hiding guerrillas.
