Told in turn by three voices, Sora, Nana and Nagi, the novel lets the same moments and the same shared past be felt, and remembered, differently by each. Their mother Aeja was all love until her beloved husband was killed in an accident on a work site; then she stopped living, wrecking herself and both daughters while telling them that life is empty at its core. Sora dreams of dying out without leaving anything behind, and Nana distrusts any love given with full force. Their careful, chilly world is shaken when Nana becomes pregnant and finds herself cherishing the child, and no one is more thrown by it than Sora.
