Evren is born on 12 September 1980, the day of the military coup, the son of an accountant father and a teacher mother. In the poor neighbourhood where he grows up, his path crosses those of Ruhan, who scrapes a living from the rubbish dumps; Gülgün, the bar hostess of his dreams; İsmail the thief; the fixer Hadim Bey; and Eyüp, the womanising boss of the Mubah group of companies, who with luck and Hadim Bey's help always steers his boat into a calm harbour, even in the worst economic storms. Chance ties them all together through theft. Ironic in tone, the novel takes aim at unearned and unjust wealth and the accumulation of capital fed by neoliberal dogma, and holds up a mirror to poverty and lives lived outside the law.
