On 1 August 1937 a procession full of red flags crosses Paris: it is the funeral of Gerda Taro, the first female photographer to die on a battlefield, on what would have been her twenty-seventh birthday. Robert Capa, who taught her to use the Leica, walks in front, devastated. In the crowd are others who knew her long before: Ruth Cerf, her friend from Leipzig, with whom she lived through hard times in Paris after fleeing Germany; Willy Chardack, who settled for being her devoted escort; and Georg Kuritzkes, fighting in the International Brigades. Decades later their memories bring back a generation of young Jewish exiles of the 1930s.
