Paula and Sara are still in primary school when, in the early 1990s, they start hanging around Helsinki-Vantaa airport. In time their pastime becomes a worldwide scene of young women who live on the move between airports. The girls' own trip begins on 11 September 2001, aboard a flight that never makes it to New York. In February 2010 Paula, long missing, is flown back from Morocco in handcuffs and committed to a mental hospital; Sara, who now has a job at the airport, spots her and sees that she is expecting. Paula soon escapes and vanishes. Her father, Johan Lampen, is a coast guard commodore from Hiittinen who lost his own father to the sea at eight and has lived ever since by the rescuers' creed; looking for his daughter leads him to the Pacific.
