The novel takes place at the end of the nineteenth century in the Galician village of Urizh. Within a short time the peasant Petro Bezub'iak loses his wife Mariia and his youngest child, four-year-old Orysia. He is left with his fourteen-year-old son Orest, whom he will not let out of his sight, trying to shield him from every danger. Above all he fears his relatives in neighbouring Nahuievychi, where decades earlier, during a cholera epidemic, the community blamed people it believed were vampires and burned them, his own grandfather among them. That is why Petro moved away. But at Orysia's funeral his kinsman Mytro appears, talks to the boy and invites him to Nahuievychi.
