A quarter of a century after 1973, the narrator returns in memory to the Golan Heights, where he served as a reservist tank gunner while studying at a yeshiva. His recollections do not follow the calendar: scenes of the fighting and of the days spent in the Syrian enclave alternate with his childhood in the Jerusalem neighbourhood of Beit Mazmil and his regular army service. Some events he witnessed, others reach him through comrades. Running beneath the precise, often harsh accounts of battle is the absence of his best friend, Dov Indig, who was lost in the war, and the narrator's sense that a vow he made under fire is a debt he must still repay.
