Mira, born Norma, is a German gentile; her husband Nehemiah fought in the Red Army's advance on Germany and met her in Italy, where she had attached herself to Jewish women survivors heading for Palestine. In Israel she gives birth to six boys in rapid succession, perhaps for him, perhaps for the Jewish nation, perhaps to drown out a horror she brought from Germany, and she keeps the sons and their father apart. Then Zohar, the eldest, dies at nineteen in the army. For years afterwards husband and wife live side by side in a village next to the airport, each locked in silence, each grasping at life in a contrary manner, amid comic, grotesque neighbours and a quiet, clever dog.
