Ljósgildran

A stranger checks into a hotel in the depths of a Reykjavík winter and pulls the receptionist, the poet H.M.S. Hermann, into a ruthless contest for power. Over the following weeks this sprawling, many-voiced novel braids the doomed love of Jakob and Lára into a mocking portrait of Icelandic politics and culture, as mysterious forces seize the city amid fear of an epidemic. It is also a book about reading and the stories a society tells itself.
