An out-of-the-way coastal settlement in the south hears of the Second World War from afar, but soon the war, and with it the modern world, reaches the place itself and changes it in ways no one predicted. Following the community across generations, the novel satirises human folly, greed and ignorance, and shows inherited traits holding fast however much circumstances change.
