In 1998 Cao Shuangyang, eldest son of a solid farming family in Yingwu village on the Wheat River, is in love with Tao'er, the village beauty. When the Caos cannot pay for her mother's operation the couple drift apart, and Shuangyang, who missed university after fighting for his sister's honour, goes into coal mining with Zhao Meng, the son of a county official. Tao'er leaves for the city. Bai Liguo, a blind singer of local ballads with a hawk as his eyes, tries to keep Shuangyang honest and, at night among the graves, hears the history of the Cao family and its land from the dead. Years later Shuangyang returns to the village to gather its farmland into one enterprise.
