These sixteen stories look at an Odia society in transition, where tradition and modernity pull against each other. They follow the downtrodden and the women of rural communities, exploited by the powerful, bound by taboos and superstitions, and played upon by political schemers, as well as people bewildered by new tools and changing ways of living. Among them are tales of a witch, a snake charmer, a horoscope and a parched land.
