In August 1947 a young man arrives by train in a little Swedish town built around a lorry plant, hoping to begin again after the Łódź ghetto, Auschwitz, Ravensbrück and Wöbbelin. In this intimate memoir his son goes back to that town, where he learned to talk and came to feel at home, and where his father struggled to build a new life. Each survivor's route out of the camps, the author suggests, is unique and improbable. But the optimism of the early postwar years in the town soon dims under the darkness his father brought with him.
