At the end of the 1940s, the time of the Cominform resolution in Yugoslavia, one of the officials at the British embassy in Belgrade is the celebrated writer Lawrence Durrell, informal as a man and unpredictable as a diplomat. He begins an affair with the wife of a senior functionary, who soon ends up in the Goli Otok camp. When she meets the same fate, the British writer does everything he can to save her and to help her daughter, a girl left without both parents. The love triangle unfolds in postwar Belgrade, seen through a foreigner's eyes, and is told as a collage of documents: letters, diaries, Durrell's reports to the Foreign Office, camp officers' reports to the secret police, diplomatic correspondence and decoded cables.
