A man from the West arrives in Thailand and is drawn into the bars of Bangkok, where he falls in love with a Thai woman. He decides to shield her, in the manner of a self-assured protector, from the world around her. Her quiet, Buddhist acceptance of things, which looks like passivity, slowly works against his confident pose, and his account turns into a frank examination of his own vulnerability. Beside him moves a second figure, his shadow and counterpart, and the story doubles as a collage-like travelogue about the misunderstandings between East and West, closed by the narrator's own notes.
