When the Portuguese take Goa, converting people by force or by bribes and tearing down temples, the Gaud Saraswat Brahmin families who have lived there for generations see their beliefs and way of life threatened. Vittu Pai, grandson of Narasappayya of Verane village, slips away one night with five or six families; some travel as far as Kochi, while his own household settles in Bellambeedu near Kumbale on the coast of Karnataka and starts a new trade. Spanning nine generations from 1510 to about 1760 and more than 150 characters, among them Hindus, Muslims and Christians, chieftains, traders, priests and sorcerers, the novel follows a community uprooted and resettled, and a family that moves from the joint household to smaller ones.
