Han Yu-na has grown up hearing that her real father is not the man who married her mother and raised her, but Jeong, a worker at her grandfather's leather factory who ran off and stowed away to Nagasaki. At twenty-one she follows him there and takes a job as a cook at a restaurant called Next Door. Her colleagues share no bond but their zeal: a gentle dishwasher who was an abandoned baby, a manager who has loved one woman for thirty years, an Ainu cook who collects things that have no name, a graffiti artist and a homesick Chinese girl. Through their days the novel looks at people who never quite fit in.
