A Good Winter

Olga's friend Lara is now a grandmother, and it is hard on her: her daughter Sophie, recently widowed, has just had a baby and seems to want nothing to do with it, so Lara is caring for both. Olga pitches in whenever she can, and in her own telling she is nothing but supportive and giving. Under that runs a possessive longing to matter more to Lara than anyone else does. Told in Olga's voice, which sounds light and harmless at first, with snatches of her past, her desires and her sadness, the story follows the helpful older woman as her part in the household grows darker.
