Many years ago Lorenza was a beautiful, unbearable girl with a dazzling charm. The woman who comes to the lawyer Guido Guerrieri's office one late-winter afternoon looks nothing like her: the years have worn her down, and her son Iacopo is in prison, convicted of murder. Guerrieri is far from convinced of the young man's innocence, but takes on the appeal anyway, perhaps as a melancholy tribute to the ghosts and lost privileges of his youth. Told in alternating strands, the story moves between the past of that old love and the trial, a journey into the treacherous workings of justice.
