Sarajevo, a warm night in May 1993, a year into the siege. In their kitchen, Davor, a Christian, and Ayda, a Muslim, who have kept their love alive through the ruin and madness of the city, watch the clock and wait for the short half-hour lull when the snipers rest; they have decided to run, towards freedom or towards death. Twenty years later a Bulgarian writer travels to Sarajevo to meet the Serbian translator of his book. In a tavern, as the empty bottles pile up, they start talking about the war and long-buried secrets surface. Flashbacks and interviews with killers, victims and those who were both widen the story of the young couple, modelled on a real pair the world called Sarajevo's Romeo and Juliet, into a portrait of the Bosnian war.
