At the end of the Qing dynasty Lu Xiumi, daughter of an official family in Puji, is seized by bandits on the way to her wedding and held on an island across the water from Huajiashe. Carrying the diary of a revolutionary who once lodged in her home, she becomes obsessed with turning the place into a heaven on earth. In the 1950s her son Tan Gongda, head of Meicheng county, pours himself into grand projects until a storm breaks his dam, costing him his post and his love, Yao Peipei, and sending him into exile at Huajiashe. In the present day the poet Tan Duanwu, just divorced from his lawyer wife, arrives at Huajiashe, now a resort where money buys anything and his grandmother's revolution is staged as a show.
