For decades Loya Kaplan, 'an orphan on every side', has lived ten kilometres above the ground as a flight attendant, never going further than the airport hotel when she lands in Israel. Then a lawyer calls: Davidi, her late father's friend and rival, who was part of her whole childhood, has died and left her his old house in her childhood neighbourhood in Ramat Hasharon, provided she comes and carries out his last wish. On a sweltering late-summer day she walks into the house under a huge ficus tree. The novel moves between her lengthening stay in 1990s Israel, her childhood and youth in the housing estate, and an older past revealed in her father's wartime diary from Czechoslovakia and two letters.
