A novel built from its author's own life, which takes in his father's and mother's stories, the history of earlier generations and the history of Transylvania. The writer grows up in Chișineu-Criș near Arad, a few kilometres from today's Hungarian border, where his father's family lived; his mother came from Baraolt in the heart of the Székely Land. Between these two points Transylvania becomes both a metaphor and a real battleground, where religions, dialects, mentalities and landscapes shape character. It is the portrait of a writer's path and of a region.
