Ivo Brandani, an engineer, has always lived in peacetime. When the book begins, on 29 May 2015, he is sixty-nine, disillusioned, angry and morbidly attached to life, working for a multinational on a secret project: rebuilding the dying coral reef of the Red Sea in synthetic materials. On the flight home from Egypt, his mind dulled by tranquillizers, the phases of his petty-bourgeois life come back in reverse: the decline of the 2000s, the abuses of a country overwhelmed by servility and bureaucracy, the dream of an unspoiled Aegean, the student struggles of the 1960s, the discovery of love and sex and the barbaric postwar world of his early childhood.
