Kupferberg, later Miedzianka, a small town near Jelenia Góra, is gone: its inn where wives gossiped while husbands sang, its dances, brewery, paper mill and workshops, the seamstress and the woman who sold butter and eggs, the cemetery whose gravestones were dragged out with tractors. After the war the Soviets came to mine uranium, and the town had only a few decades left. From former residents, scraps of memory and old documents, the author asks whether the ruthless mining of 1948 to 1952 destroyed it, or whether the authorities invented the damage to tear it down.
