On Leonito, a Caribbean island run by a junta of colonels, Luis Ferrer goes looking for an indigenous rebel he has been hired to interview. Instead he finds a puzzle left by a dead man whose will still bends other people's fates, and two figures bound together by it: the cruel Lars and the false citizen Laventier. Their story reaches back to occupied Paris and Hitler's Germany.
