A boy recalls a childhood in 1968 in a drowsy village not far from Budapest, the ninth child in a family marked by its numbers, its want, its religion and its ailments. His parents keep a strict, secretive Catholic home against the Communist regime, and state and father alike hold total power over him. He learns what hunger is, and what it means to be forbidden even love, and slowly comes to recognise his own guilt and longing.
