What should one do with a dead friend's estate, with papers, pictures, memories and unanswered questions? Searching and feeling his way, a narrator tries to write the life of the Volga German Kirill Bergerow, alias Carl Berger: an existence spanning half of Europe and half a century, so full of ruptures and breaks that it can hardly be pinned down. But whose story is being told here? The life of the friend, or the picture the narrator tries to make of him after the fact? A panoramic journey through half a century of dramatic history, and a true life full of turbulence, unspeakable suffering and moments of incomparable happiness.
