In the canyon of the Lancang River below the sacred Kawagebo peak, where Yunnan meets Tibet, different peoples and faiths have lived side by side for centuries. Early in the twentieth century a Western religion arrives: Father Sha Lishi of the French Foreign Missions comes as a young man to preach and gives decades of his life to this remote land, though the missionaries also bring guns and contempt for Buddhism. Tibetan lamas and living Buddhas, Naxi Dongba priests, Catholic fathers and Han officials with their soldiers vie for the canyon, and the Yegong, the oldest and richest Tibetan clan there, feuds with a band of Khampa warriors. Zeren Dawa, a Khampa giant turned bandit, is softened only by his love for a beautiful Naxi woman, Mu Fang. Over a century of upheaval, love sometimes bridges what faith and clan divide.
