Simon Bebler, a young student and amateur playwright who, as his friend the actress Violeta tells him, has left this world to live in an invented one, learns that he has cancer and only a year to live. He settles accounts with his girlfriends and his parents and decides to spend the time he would have had if he were healthy. Helped by an odd beggar, he travels to New York, where a luxurious but dangerous adventure awaits in a Fifth Avenue apartment belonging to a rich asset-stripper, Vincent Vega, in which things mysteriously vanish and reappear. A girl called Virgo comes and goes, secret agents appear, and the passive onlooker must finally decide whether to act. Characters borrowed from American films mix with real ones.
