The travel writer Igor Hladnik suddenly disappeared, leaving behind his wife and his son Marko, who chose to study comparative literature and write his thesis on his father's books. Five years later an official from the foreign ministry brings the family an unfinished manuscript, and Marko realises his father has gone back to Africa with a woman companion. He decides to follow and find him. At the same time two couples arrive in Africa: Silvija and Peter from Slovenia, retracing the route described in one of Hladnik's books, and the Englishman Jack, researching European racism for his doctorate, with his reluctant older wife Sally. On the long journey their stories begin to intertwine.
