In 1969 Vili Vaupotič, a young academy-trained painter from Slovenia, leaves for London convinced that his art will conquer the world. Already at the border the officials bring him down to earth, the first of many lessons in a city where the hungriest seekers of fame and wealth must put up with petty harassment and absurd complications. On the ferry across the Channel he glimpses Sandrina, his ideal of beauty, and then loses sight of her for a long time. Swinging between the pose of a starving prophet of art and a hungry adventurer, he keeps losing his paintings and works his way from the countryside to a grand country house, part picaresque, part love story, part travelogue.
