Benjamin lives alone with his mother in a small flat on an estate by Lake Constance, and he is not allowed the dog he longs for. One day he meets Mr Agostini, an old man from the neighbourhood whose dog Hemingway keeps him company. But Mr Agostini is no longer steady on his feet and does not know what will become of Hem. Nor does Karin, who wonders who would look after her dog if something happened to her. In thirty-eight episodes, children, old people, single women and a homeless man tell of how we live, alone and together.
