In 1938, as another war looms, the preserved body of a soldier from the Schleswig wars of the 1800s is pulled from Frøslev Mose near the German-Danish frontier, lying as though asleep beneath his greatcoat. Two Danes and a German venture onto the bog to learn how he died, and then the German vanishes. In 2000 Esmé, who cleans at the history institute in Copenhagen and loves the past, happens upon the file on the case. She borrows it, and her own childhood, the dead soldier and the missing German physician gradually become entangled.
