Tujan, a Berber village near Matmata in the Tunisian south, is gripped by thirst, drought and a long feud over water between two clans. Sultan of the Awlad al-Ghazal loved Sahra, daughter of the Awlad al-Ahmar, the clan that controls the water and diverts it from the springs of Mount Tujan. Their love might have reconciled the two clans, but when Sultan revealed the secret she had entrusted to him, the feud flared up and he had to leave. Twenty years and twenty volumes of love poems later, he comes back, weighed down by the past and by remorse. The story is told by several voices and mixes realism with Berber legends, some invented and some drawn from tradition.
