Two strands alternate. In one, an anonymous woman narrates her own life after a nervous breakdown, raging against the modern woman her mother Tasharej embodies, and against the people around her: a banker friend who was to help her with a loan to open a pharmacy, and a cousin closer to her than her brother. In the other, told in the third person, Yarfell, a man from the village of Soukrino on the coast, and his sister Yeddé, a housekeeper living with a dressmaker in the capital, get by on dreams and memories. The book never names its country: the city is only "the capital", and the people and places bear invented names.
