Billy, the only son of Liam and Iris, is a quick, quirky little boy who leaves odd arrangements of toys in every room. Just as his parents despair of having another child, Jason enters the family in difficult circumstances, and the two boys grow close. Then a terrible accident changes everything, and Billy becomes convinced he is a bird. The family moves from Auckland to Dunedin to make a fresh start, but Billy, lonely at a new school, spends his time in trees, will eat nothing but birdseed fare and makes bird calls. Liam and Iris, at odds and caught up in their own grief, cannot agree on how to help him, and have to hold the family together somehow.
