Tom Stone, a screenwriter with one early success and little work since, tells the story of his wife Ann, whom he married on impulse on holiday. Both nearly forty, with a baby on the way, they buy a half-derelict house in Hackney, East London, and money keeps running short. Ann, who has lived through a train crash, says a vagrant is following her and takes him for a bad omen; the police have little to go on. She scrubs the house, hears noises and smells things no one else notices, and shapes clay guardian figures. After their son Arlo is born her behaviour grows stranger, and Tom, close to losing the house, turns for work to a successful television writer who was also on the train.
