The novel invents Sylvia Plath's last year from the inside, in a voice that swings between despair and exhilaration, jealousy and grandeur. She loves her small children fiercely, wants nothing more than to write, and resents her husband Ted Hughes, whose work always comes first while the daily chores fall to her. Trapped in the role of housewife, she lets hope and hopelessness feed each other, yet her thoughts reveal an artist of rare power. It is a book about being a mother and being a creator.
