The light of the Enlightenment finds Greece in the darkness of Ottoman rule. In Akarnania in these years Christodoulos Pamplekis is born and grows up, motherless and scarred by smallpox, and finds a way out in letters at a monastery school. His father, an outlawed klepht-armatolos, is forced after a clash with a Turkish force to take the boy with him into the mountains, where they are trapped and captured; the child witnesses his father's execution and is dragged to the slave market. Fate puts him in the hands of a Greek nobleman, and his life changes forever: from Xiromero, Litochoro and Rapsani to the Athonite Academy, Venice, Vienna and Leipzig, he becomes a leading teacher who clashes with theocracy.
